Job Summary Provides editorial support for the Einstein Papers Project which researches and publishes The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein. Position involves research assistance and editorial work under minimal supervision in a collaborative team environment. Carries out and oversees the transcription and typesetting of hand-written manuscripts and of printed documents in English, German, and French; specializes in deciphering, transcribing, and typesetting mathematical and scientific calculations; creates electronic files of translations from foreign languages into English; creates and manages data records for individual archival documents.
Essential Job Duties - Transcribes handwritten and typed primary historical sources, including complex scientific texts, equations, and tables in several languages.
- Meticulous and highly-detail oriented proofreading English and foreign language documents (texts, dates, numbers) and check against databases and original manuscripts.
- Checks formulas and scientific notation, makes corrections.
- Compares authorized and unauthorized reproductions and translations of original texts.
- Carries out bibliographic research, checks references and publication dates for historical materials.
- Uses dedicated software for transcriptions - Latex and Adobe FrameMaker 11 - in addition to Word, Excel, and other database entry tools.
- Works with extended spreadsheets, enters data and corrects records in web-based catalogs.
- Proofreads documents, compares original sources to transcribed documents, makes corrections, additions, deletions.
- Organizes electronic files into electronic book files (containing ca. 2,000 separate documents for a total of ca 3,500 pp.)
Basic Qualifications - BA or equivalent
- 4 years progressively responsible relevant work experience with transcribing and proofreading multilingual technical documents.
- Mastery of the Microsoft and Adobe suite of applications.
- Familiarity with databases and scientific historical editorial best practices desirable.
- Good reading knowledge of German and French.
- Knowledge of library catalogs, including JSTOR, Web of Science, etc.
- Well organized, meticulous, patient, able and willing to follow instructions and guidance.
- Willing to acquire new project-specific skills.
- Strong written communication skills with colleagues, institute, and outside collaborators; cooperative team member with highest standards of professionalism.
- Able to work independently and flexibly, with minimum supervision; set priorities, use discretion and independent judgment.
