Description & Details: The Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics at North Dakota State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in January 2025. A doctoral degree and an active research program related to U.S. agricultural policy is required. The full-time position will be aligned with the Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies, and the successful candidate is expected to serve as the Assistant Director of the Center. This administrative role involves providing leadership to the research, extension, and outreach activities of the Center.
The primary selection criteria will be the quality of the applicant's research and interests. The position provides an outstanding opportunity for independent research and ample opportunities for collaboration. The Assistant Professor is expected to participate actively in the University's intellectual activities, maintain an active extension program, and engage with North Dakota's agricultural stakeholders on policy issues relevant to the Upper Midwest.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful applicant must have received a doctoral degree in agricultural and applied economics or related fields, preferably within the last five years (or expected by December 2024). The candidate should also have excellent oral and written communication skills and advanced training in agricultural policy, international trade, and/or applied econometrics. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications: A record of relevant publications and extramural funding; training and analytical experience in agricultural and applied economics, including familiarity with U.S. agricultural policy; demonstrated ability to develop and apply structural economic models; knowledge of advanced statistical and machine learning methods; and the ability to engage with stakeholders from the agricultural sector. The successful candidate can work independently and collegially with colleagues and clientele from different disciplines and with varying experience levels and develop an extension program of regional relevance.

About the Department, the University, and the Region: The Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics has developed strong regional support for the excellence of its teaching, research, and extension programs. The Department comprises fifteen tenure-track faculty, six research professors, and two extension specialists. It is home to the Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies. Research strengths include risk and trading, agribusiness, agricultural policy, and international trade. Faculty in the Department are actively involved in interdisciplinary research and teaching, especially in collaboration with the Northern Crop Institute, the School of Natural Resource Sciences, and the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute. The Department offers three undergraduate majors (Economics, Agribusiness, and Agricultural Economics) and one M.S. degree (Agribusiness and Applied Economics). The Department contributes to several interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs at North Dakota State University. Recent improvements in research activities have elevated the University's research rankings and increased research budgets through greater success in attaining extramural funding. Extensive engagement with agribusiness firms, both domestic and international, is encouraged. About 12,000 students attend North Dakota State University.
