Job Description

The Clinical Coordinator is essential to the successful daily operation of the Respiratory & Pulmonary Diagnostic Services department. They will facilitate the clinical aspects of daily departmental operations in collaboration with the Respiratory & Pulmonary Diagnostic Services leadership team. Primary functions will include: development and provision of staff training and education programs; departmental orientation & competencies; creating clinical and operational departmental policies and procedures; and new program development. The Clinical Coordinator will assist with evaluations and discipline of all departmental staff and may act in the role of Manager in their absence.

Essential Duties:

  • Sound working knowledge of the field of respiratory care and related services.
  • Basic knowledge of Cystic Fibrosis pathophysiology and care management.
  • Ability to analyze CF sputum culture results to determine isolation precautions and respiratory care management in CF as it pertains to the identified bacteria, fungus, or AFB.
  • Knowledge of the importance of infection control procedures and prevention of cross contamination and methods of decontamination of respiratory care equipment.
  • Knowledge of the medications used in the area of CF Care (bronchodilators, mucolytics, inhaled antibiotics, inhaled steroids, etc.).
  • Possess a high degree of interpersonal skills to communicate and educate patients and staff.
  • Ability to perform as an RCP staff member when necessary in emergency situations (RRT, MAT and Code BLUE).
  • Demonstrates professional interaction with patients, physicians, and nurses as well as other health care team members.
  • The ability to be clear and concise in both verbal and written communication and a service-oriented presentation in general are required.
  • Maintains all required documentation for each patient in compliance with regulations and expectations of Keck Medical Center of USC and Cystic Fibrosis Center..
  • Serves as a CF respiratory resource person for the Keck Medical Center of USC.
  • Develops material for orientation and ongoing staff education as it relates to Cystic Fibrosis respiratory care and management.
  • Attends and participates in all CF clinics, interdisciplinary team rounds, research meetings, team meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Schedules and coordinates patient care in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Facilitates effective communication with the interdisciplinary CF care team.
  • Attends Respiratory & Pulmonary Diagnostic Services seminars and conventions to avail the latest advances in the fields of Respiratory Care, Pulmonary Diagnostics, ECMO, and Sleep Medicine. Ability to convey this valuable information to the rest of the department.
  • Provides support to CF patients, their families, CF center care staff, and the Respiratory Therapy
  • Provides airway clearance education to patients, assists with respiratory equipment recommendations, ordering and maintenance, education on respiratory devices use, care and care, and on aerosol delivery.
  • Perform frequent respiratory care management evaluations of all CF patients hospitalized and recommend therapy options with inpatient RTs and other clinical staff.
  • Performs outpatient clinic evaluations (ACT, equipment use and maintenance, order of meds) at least quarterly on all patients cared for by the CF center. Performs yearly evaluations on all CF patients with attention to monitoring the performance of patient aerosol delivery, use of airway clearance technique or device and any other respiratory related care individually prescribed for the CF patient including oxygen or other non invasive respiratory equipment.
  • Responsible for working closely with nursing staff and medical staff to implement the case management system, looking for more effective methods of improving patient outcome within an appropriate length of stay.
  • Provide patient education in all care settings. Develop patient education materials for distribution and participate in actively writing in the quarterly CF newsletter and clinic exam room billboard updates.
  • Attends annual North American CF Conference for continuing education and clinical competence.
  • Researches new technology for potential implementation in CF care.
  • Responsible for working closely with case management to assist in the coordination of home respiratory equipment ordering, set up, and training.
  • Provides for orientation, training, and continuing education of staff.
  • Participates and maintains performance improvement and quality control activities which support the CF center and the hospital..
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with the CF care team.
  • Demonstrates the ability to safely and competently use the necessary equipment required and the cleaning/disinfecting procedure to ensure decontamination of such equipment after use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Respiratory Care, Health Care Management or related field
  • Req Associate's degree Respiratory Care
  • Req 3 years Experience as a respiratory therapist
  • Req Strong interpersonal, teamwork and customer service skills are necessary.
  • Req Strong analytical, problem-solving skills.
  • Req Must have strong understanding of respiratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref 1 year Experience as a respiratory therapist in CF care strongly preferred.
  • Pref Strong computer skills preferred.
  • Pref Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (NBRC) (CPFT or RPFT)
  • Pref Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Respiratory Care Practitioner - RCP (CA DCA)
  • Req Registered Respiratory Therapist - RRT (NBRC)
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)



The annual base salary range for this position is $68,640.00 - $112,370.00.
