Job Description

To assist with research activities in the Department of Psychiatry related to projects funded by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association. Key projects will focus on family caregivers and older adults living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The overall goal of this research program is to identify potentially modifiable daily experiences (e.g., daily stress and coping strategies) within care dyads (i.e., family caregivers and they people they support) that influence health and well-being over time.

With guidance from faculty and research personnel, the Clinical Research Assistant will work under the direction of the Clinical Research Coordinator to:

  • Assist with multiple organizational and administrative details of assigned projects, including but not limited to the recruitment, screening, and scheduling of study participants. 
  • Serve as the lead interviewer for the research team, which will involve conducting telephone interviews and assisting in the training of research assistants. 
  • Assume primary responsibility for cleaning and offloading of data from study devices (e.g., actigraphy monitors to measure physical activity and sleep) and performing preliminary analyses of the actigraphy data. 
  • Develop, program, and test surveys; conduct telephone or video calls to review study procedures with study participants; assist in the preparation of IRB applications, progress reports, and other summary materials; and perform literature searches. 
  • Order materials, track research related supplies, detailed record-keeping, filing, preparing study mailings and newsletters, the sending and receiving of study equipment, study participant payments, assisting with the supervision and training of student research assistants, and other duties as assigned. 
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, conference presentations, and grant proposals. 
  • There will be opportunities to lead and/or collaborate on papers, posters, and presentations for scientific meetings. 
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other team members to fulfill the goals of the projects.
  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail, outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders, and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the willingness to develop additional skills related to web delivery tools, digital media platforms, survey administration tools (e.g., REDCap, Twilio, Qualtrics), and statistical software platforms (e.g., SPSS), and the collection and analysis of actigraphy data is required. 
  • Must be willing to travel, as needed, within the state of Michigan and have reliable transportation. 
  • The ability to work flexible shifts and adapt to changing work schedules as needed (including some evenings and weekends) is required.

  • Associates Degree in Health Science discipline, including public health, psychology, social work, or related behavioral sciences, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • An understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures.

This is a full-time position; 40 hours/week Monday through Friday, core hours are 9 AM - 5 PM but could potentially change based on operational needs and required meetings.  

Some evening and weekend hours may be required as needed, if so the schedule for that week will be adjusted accordingly.
