This is work in an institutional, home, or community setting and includes the application of specialized program knowledge and service skills in providing assistance to individuals and families served by social welfare programs. This work involves such functions as obtaining selected background information through interviews and home visits, establishing eligibility to make use of agency resources, helping individuals identify needs that are related to services the agency can provide, explaining and encouraging the use of agency and community resources as means of dealing with identified problems, and making appropriate referrals to sources of additional help. Duties may range from work that involves group leadership and giving practical guidance on day-to-day activities to residents in a government facility, to providing spiritual guidance and comfort, to work that involves training or employment opportunities.

 

This is general work as a counselor for all counseling occupations not listed separately. Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees. The job requires advance knowledge of assessing breastfeeding problems and concerns, counseling techniques and social work principles and practices.

The Family Support Worker is a certified lactation counselor that provides breastfeeding education and support to Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clients. The Family Support Worker will provide services in the WIC Program in accordance with the policies of the state WIC program and regulations as stated in DHM 150-24. Assignment of duty station, hours and days worked may vary as needed. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Breastfeeding Coordinator and in collaboration with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator.

 

Educate WIC pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum mothers, and family members on breastfeeding-related issues, both in-person and over the phone, at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC agency. Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC mothers to help them successfully establish breastfeeding, overcome common barriers to breastfeeding, and prevent and handle common breastfeeding problems or concerns. Assess any breastfeeding concerns or issues presented from breastfeeding mothers. Conduct breastfeeding classes and facilitate breastfeeding socials.

 

Assist in training of new family support workers, and new WIC staff in required breastfeeding education. Assist in providing breastfeeding update training to WIC staff. Assist in conducting monthly peer counselor meetings, receive referrals from WIC staff as the designated breastfeeding expert, and provide follow-up calls to prenatal and breastfeeding clients as deemed necessary. Document breastfeeding contacts in the FL-Wise system in accordance with department policy. Documentation is accurate, clear, and appropriate for all contact made with WIC clients. Manage caseload of assigned WIC clients and contact clients according to established procedures, maintaining client confidentiality. Coordinate services for clients and make referrals to appropriate resources and agencies as needed.

 

Teach mothers how to assemble and use breast pumps (manual and electric). Provide breastfeeding supplies and other resources to mothers as needed. Maintain breast pump and breastfeeding supply inventory and documentation at site.

 

Assist the local WIC agency in outreach, promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned. Understand WIC eligibility criteria and programmatic requirements to answer basic questions about WIC and make appropriate referrals.

 

Adhere to FDOH in Duval County and Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention (NCDP) policies and procedures pertaining to client confidentiality and data security. Accurate and timely submission of Employee Activity Records (EARs), time records, travel logs, monthly report of activities and other reports are submitted to the NCDP Administrative Office. Answer telephones, file and perform travel in relation to above duties and for professional development. Reliable transportation is required. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
