POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Callahan Library on the St. Joseph’s University Patchogue Campus seeks a part-time evening and weekend library assistant for the fall and spring semesters. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills; adhere to scheduled hours by punctual, regular attendance; validate ID credentials for admission to the library; perform routine circulation transactions; accept and record payments for overdue fines and/or lost materials; answer phones; locate and accurately shelve materials (Library of Congress Classification); participate in shelf-shifting projects; monitor printer/copier paper; and other duties in keeping with an academic library. Essential to employment is maintaining strict confidentiality of user records. Specific responsibilities will be refined by the Executive Director of Libraries, matching employee strengths with the needs of the library.

REQUIRED :

• Work experience of at least five years (post HS graduation), with library experience desirable
• Some post-secondary education, preferably an associate's degree or equivalent
• Courteous, tactful demeanor when interacting with librarians, staff, students, and faculty
• Accurate adherence to library rules, policies, and procedures; ability to explain them professionally
• Proficiency troubleshooting hardware problems and/or reporting them clearly to information technology staff
• Working knowledge of software, including MS Office applications
• Ability to locate, retrieve, shift, and accurately shelve books; strength to push library cart with filled with books; coordination to use stepstool for high shelves

HOURS (FALL/SPRING SEMESTERS) :

• Monday - Thursday: 3-8 pm or 4-8 pm
• Saturday rotation: 10 am - 4 pm
• The flexibility to switch shifts on an as-needed basis is highly desirable
• Some weekday hours may be available during the summer and intersessions

COMPENSATION:

Pay: $16.00 per hour
