Recruitment Overview
The City of Avondale is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Police Officer Recruit. This opportunity is open to entry-level applicants who share the department's values of integrity, ethical standards, cultural awareness, and dedication to community policing.
Application Process
Submit an Online Application: Applications must be completed and submitted through the City of Avondale website by the stated deadline.
Take the FrontLine National Exam: Candidates must complete this exam through the National Testing Network (NTN) by the specified date.
Minimum passing scores: Reading 70, Writing 70.
Complete a Background Packet:
Fill out the Avondale Police Department Applicant Background Questionnaire.
Complete the AZPOST Personal History Questionnaire and share the ID number with the department.
Chief's Interview: Selected applicants will be invited to attend a Chief's Interview.
Physical Agility Test: Pass the Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT), which includes:
99-yard obstacle course.
165-pound body drag for 32 feet.
Climbing a 6-foot chain link and solid fence.
500-yard run.
Qualified applicants will be selected to attend the Phoenix Regional Police Academy or another Arizona-accredited academy as an Avondale Police Recruit. Successful academy graduates will begin the Field Training Officer phase.
Job Description
As a Police Officer, your responsibilities will include:
Patrolling designated areas and responding to public calls for service.
Investigating crimes and crime scenes, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and making arrests when necessary.
Writing detailed reports and testifying in court as required.
Serving warrants, assisting other bureaus, and conducting various supervisory tasks.
Minimum Requirements
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Age: Must be 21 years of age by Police Academy graduation.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Driver's License: Valid Arizona Operator's License by the time of hire.
Certification: Successful completion of an Arizona Police Academy and AZ POST certification required.
Physical Fitness: Above-average physical conditioning, including the ability to run, climb, crawl, and meet entry-level officer fitness standards.
Pre-Employment Requirements
All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of:
Comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprinting.
Polygraph examination.
Chief's Interview.
Psychological evaluation.
AZ POST medical exam and drug screening.
Automatic Disqualifiers
Applicants will be disqualified for any of the following:
Dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
Felony convictions or offenses equivalent to a felony in Arizona.
Non-U.S. citizenship.
Illegal marijuana use within the past two years.
Illegal use of dangerous drugs or narcotics, excluding marijuana, more than five times or once after age 21.
Illegal drug use within the past seven years, including cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, or anabolic steroids (non-prescription).
History of prescription medication abuse.
Frequent traffic violations within the past three years, indicating disregard for traffic laws.
Suspended driver's license due to excessive violations.
Domestic violence convictions.
Lying or falsifying information during the hiring process.
